Where are you located?
Depending on your geographical location, some suppliers may serve you better than others. If they are close to you, they will likely be more reasonably priced.
Also, is there anything in particular you are looking for in a window? (storm protection / energy efficiency / shapes / operation style / etc.) You mentioned wood windows, any particular reason? If you can stomach the looks of em', a fiberglass or PVC window may help the budget but still deliver a great product.
With a little more info, we can be a little more helpful.
I am located in Englewood, NJ Bergen County. Looking for energy efficiency. Most of the windows are divided light double hungs wood in keeping with the integrity of a 110 year old Victorian home. Looking for doors as well. Thank you.

Marvin has line of fiberglass windows that is lower in cost than thier wood line. Slightly less than Andersen IIRC.
When you say wood, do you mean all wood or clad wood? Most of the better performing windows are acombination of wood interiors and clad exteriors. For my money, if I'm going to install high performance windows, I don't want to have to paint them every four years.
I have been going to Integrity by Marvin for good qualitry economic windows the last few years.
